Evaluations

At First Thought Therapy, we provide expert psychological evaluations for immigration cases to support individuals and families navigating the complex U.S. immigration system. Our evaluations are thorough, trauma-informed, and written to meet USCIS and immigration court standards.


What to Expect

  • 1–2 Clinical Interviews (in-person or telehealth)
  • Standardized Mental Health Assessments (e.g., PHQ-9, PCL-5)
  • Thorough, legally defensible written report
  • Coordination with your immigration attorney if requested
  • Turnaround Time: 10–14 days (Expedited available)

Evaluation Types We Offer:

Asylum Evaluations

We conduct psychological assessments for individuals fleeing persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
Focus: PTSD, trauma, emotional distress related to past harm
Includes: 1–2 clinical interviews, symptom assessments, and detailed documentation of psychological impact

Hardship Waivers (I-601 / I-601A)

These evaluations assess the emotional, psychological, and financial hardship that a U.S. citizen or legal resident would face if their loved one were denied legal status or deported.  

Focus: Impact on family (spouse, child, parent), anxiety, depression, financial strain  

Goal: Demonstrate “extreme and exceptional hardship”

VAWA (Violence Against Women Act)

We provide evaluations for immigrant survivors of domestic violence who are petitioning under VAWA.  Focus: Trauma symptoms, domestic abuse impact, psychological consequences  For: Spouses, children, or parents of abusive U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents

U-Visa Evaluations

For victims of qualifying crimes (e.g., assault, sexual abuse, kidnapping) who have cooperated with law enforcement.  

Focus: Long-term mental health effects, trauma, safety concerns  

Goal: Support the petition for immigration relief and protection

T-Visa Evaluations

For survivors of human trafficking who meet federal eligibility guidelines.  

Focus: Psychological impact of trafficking, coercion, and ongoing trauma  

Includes: Trauma screenings, safety assessment, and future treatment needs

Adam Walsh Waiver Evaluations

A waiver evaluation for petitioners with past criminal sexual offense records seeking to sponsor family members.  

Focus: Risk assessment, rehabilitation efforts, parenting capacity, and potential harm to the beneficiary  

Requires: Deep analysis of historical behavior, current stability, and expert testimony

N-648 Disability Waiver (for Naturalization)

A psychological evaluation for individuals with mental health disorders or cognitive impairments who seek an exemption from the English/civics test during naturalization. 

Focus: Long-term impairment, DSM-5 diagnosis, functional impact 

Completed on USCIS Form N-648, signed by a licensed clinical social worker
